Trick or Treat with a Bear

Kaden and I walked around the neighborhood donning his bear costume and a plastic pumpkin pail. He loved it. We walked up to each house and he said "trick or treat" and then gave them each a "thank you" and an occasional "bye bye" or "see ya later". He got a solid 25 pieces of candy for an hour of work. Not great, but decent with legs as short as his. (He's not a fast walker.)

500 2007 Running Miles

I passed my goal of 500 running miles for 2007 that I made at the beginning of the year. It happened on the 10th mile of the half marathon.

Woohoo!

Maybe I'll hit 600 this year.

Columbus Half Marathon (2:10:46)

Well, it came and went. I did my first longer run and it was great. To keep it short, I was a little nervous going in thinking I wasn't prepared. Well, I'd say I was about 85% prepared. The "Hal Higdon" training sheet I used only got me up to 10 miles of running at a time and I think it needs to go to race length. Ugh. Thirteen miles seems more than three miles longer than ten. Oh well.

During the race, I tried to keep a good pace and was able to keep them all within about a minute of each other. However, I wish I'd kept them all closer to 9:45/mile for a bit better of a finish. Either way, I did the first eleven or so miles without problem and then the last two (slightly uphill - north on High St) had me huffing for the end. I was trying to make up a little time, but I lost my breathing rhythm.

Well, now I need to decide on the next race - another half or a full?

Here are a few stats and photos from the race.

Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes 46 seconds

Mile 1: 9.44
Mile 2: 9.20
Mile 3: 9.31
Mile 4: 9.55
Mile 5: 9.38
Mile 6: 9.38
Mile 7: 9.55
Mile 8: 10.04
Mile 9: 10.04
Mile 10: 10.35
Mile 11: 10.32
Mile 12-13.1: 22.29 (I didn't see the mile marker sight to split it)

My Desktop Image

I thought I'd share this since it turned out pretty cool. I have the Dell 20" wide screen LCD monitor, so the image is 1680x1050. It was a shot from Tincup Pass, Colorado that I selected to do sepia on part of it and kept the original color on the rest. The other is a shot of Kaden on his electric Jeep with the same mask/sepia work.

Colorado Trip Photos

After a few hours of resizing, processing and captioning online, I finally got most of the photos online. I will work on the panorama photos next. I uploaded 195 photos from four days of travel. Yikes. Did I overdue it? ...nah.

10 Mile Run (1:33:12) - Best of the Season

Today was my last "big run" before the Columbus 1/2 Marathon next Sunday. I set off from my house and out to Fetter and then down to SR 81. I headed East on 81 all the way to Fisher Rd. (right before the ice cream stand). After a turn around, I headed back home.

What a great run! I felt really strong the entire way and slowly drank the water I took with me, still having a little left when I finished.

Here are my splits as best as I could take them based on my approximate distant measuring.

Miles 1-3 = 27:41 (avg 9:13)
Mile 4 = 9:40
Mile 5 = 9:24
Mile 6 = 9:14
Mile 7 = 9:27
Mile 8-9 = 18:39 (avg 9:19)
Mile 10 = 9:04

Average = 9:19/mile

Gwenny's Birthday Party

Kaden and I showed up to Gwenny's 2nd Birthday Party tonight with some stickers and a card in tow. They had hot dogs on the grill, loads of toys (powered and not) and a huge cake. A great time was had and Kaden and I stayed for about 90 minutes.

Happy Birthday!

Back From Colorado

Five days in Colorado. Four hundred twenty photos. Lots of fun. Here are a few teaser photos until I can process the others.

The Last Mouthpiece

The Last Mouthpiece - Robert L. Simone

Robert L. Simone was an attorney out of Philly who defended, along with "regular people", many members of the Philly/South Jersey mafia. It starts from his beginnings in law all the way through his career and then the outcome of the trails against him.

I highly recommend this book. It was very interesting to get a glimpse into the lives of the mafia and those who represent them.

Good luck keeping all the names straight!

Four Trials - John Edwards

Four Trials - John Edwards

Four Trials is a short book that outlines Edwards' four biggest cases of his 20 year law career. He was big in the civil side of lawyering and gives the back story and the story of the trial in his book. he also gives a lot of insight into his personal life from when he was growing up to his current (at the time the book was written) career as a senator.

I thought the book was very interesting from the perspective of seeing how much work these trials take to put up a fight. In all four cases, he was on the plaintiff's side of the room. It was a great book to read before reading "The Last Mouthpiece" which puts Robert L. Simone on the other side of the room in criminal law.

Law School Confidential

Law School Confidential - Robert H. Miller

This book was basically a "how to" guide from a former Penn Law student along with some of his friends at other schools. He starts from the application process, LSAT and into the first year of law school and then on to the second and third year, finally ending up with how to do interviews and such. It seemed pretty useful and, if I go that route, I'll probably buy a copy and keep it around for reference. It's always nice to learn from others' mistakes.

If you are looking into law school, I would recommend it since it gives a lot of "real world" examples and touches on many topics. Since I haven't been to law school, I can't vouch for its accuracy, but it sure seems like a great reference.

Fort Wayne Zoo

While I was in California (or Vegas or somewhere out west), Laura and Kaden went with a group from church to the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo in Indiana. After a quick round-up at the church, Laura and Kaden headed over in caravan style with Kristen and Savannah as travel mates. I didn't get many details, but Kaden apparently enjoyed the train and brushing the goats. (Who wouldn't?!?)

Kaden's Jeep

Laura picked up a used pre-owned electric Jeep for Kaden to tool around the house with. If I'm not mistaken, it was at a garbage garage sale in the neighborhood.
